# Custom Fields

> Use custom merge fields to communicate more specifically with your customers.

Utilize custom fields to communicate more specifically to your customers. Custom fields are available on Choice and above plans.

Examples of custom fields:

* past due balance amount
* pet name
* service provided
* account number
* birthday
* VIN number

To utilize custom fields, first reach out to Captivated Support and let them know what to title the custom fields. Our team will add the custom merge fields on the back end. Once that is done, we will provide you the merge field to add to your CSV file. The merge field will be within double curly brackets (`{{pet_name}}`, `{{vin_number}}`, etc.).

Then, create a CSV file to import into Captivated. The minimum amount of information needed would be first name, last name, mobile number, and custom field. To learn more on importing a CSV into Captivated, check out this [page](/features/importing-contacts).

Your custom field column will be the [merge field](/features/templates) you will use in your [templates](/features/templates).

Once you have imported your CSV into Captivated, you can [create/modify your templates](/features/templates) to utilize these custom fields. First, navigate to the templates section in Captivated, hit "add", then click on "merge fields" in the top right and scroll to the bottom to locate the merge field you'd like to use in your template.

Use the copy button to insert the merge field into your template.
